Welcome Reception for Sport Leadership Exchange Programme Youth

The Municipality will host a welcome reception for 16 young girls who are currently in Bremen, Germany, as part of the Youth Sport Leadership Exchange Programme.

An invitation was extended to Durban by its sister-city, Bremen, to participate in the sport leadership exchange programme, which focusses on the Sustainable Cities Agenda, “Youth Empowerment, Encouragement and Education”. Other areas of focus include increased awareness in health, nutrition and fitness.

For the past 10 years, eThekwini Municipality and Bremen have engaged on a sister-city partnership around sport, arts, music, culture and science. In 2016 the German Government introduced a funding source specifically flagged for a sport co-operation leadership programme benefitting young girls who are active in community and club sport. The programme aims to expose the young athletes to the globe, promote social cohesion and strengthen relations with other countries.

The girls, were identified through a vigorous selection process that included one-on-one interviews plus a 500-word essay incorporating the four pillars supporting the programme, namely education, empowerment, encouragement and engagement.
