For Immediate Release
Water has been restored in Athlone Park and surrounding areas

The water supply in Athlone Park and surrounding areas was restored today, 23/04/2015 following a discovery last week that a steel bracket securing the 375mm trunk main located under the bridge, adjacent to the Golf Course along Prospection Road, had been stolen.
This caused the trunk mains to be dislodged from its joints for approximately 300m, creating a dangerous situation.

The theft was discovered during one of the City’s regular routine inspections. The line was immediately isolated to prevent water loss and possible damage to the bridge. The 300m sagging steel pipe is currently being replaced by a 300m PVC pipe, on a temporary basis.

The assessment conducted estimated that the brackets were stolen about a day before the discovery. The City has worked around the clock to solve this problem and restore water supply to affected communities.

The Municipality would like to express sincere gratitude to residents and the business community around the affected area for their unwavering support in proactively dealing with the situation while we were restoring the water supply.

The Municipality urges residents to continue reporting illegal water connections, vandalism or theft of Municipal infrastructure to the number 080 13 13 013, they can email: eservices@durban.gov.za or use the number 43554 to sms or fax 031 311 82 20.
