Social Cohesion Dialogue on Gays and Lesbians
EThekwini Municipality is preparing to host its third Social Cohesion Conference on 29-31 May 2017. As a build-up to the conference, the Municipality’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit will host a series of dialogues that seek to address some of the issues that seem to hinder social cohesion.
On Tuesday, 11 April 2017, the Municipality will host a dialogue titled “Gays and Lesbians in Black Community”. Gays and Lesbians are not a new phenomenon in black communities. However, this group of people are still sometimes discriminated against and in some parts of the country even face violence due to their sexual orientation. The dialogue will hear participants’ views on the core issues of identification, adapting to change and being accepted by community.
Amongst the panellists will be; acclaimed TV personality and choreographer Somizi Mhlongo; Khaya Dladla of Uzalo, Tha Simelane, Pastor Zinzi Zungu and Lwazi Blose Cele. Representatives from the Lesbians and Gay Community and Health Centre, Victory International Centre and Outreach for Gays and Lesbians will also be part of the discussions.
