Several Unnamed Roads In Westville To Be Named

Sixteen unnamed roads in Westville have been given the green light to be named.

This follows a meeting held on Thursday, 6 August 2015 by eThekwini Municipality’s Governance and Human Resources Committee, chaired by Councillor Nondumiso Cele.

The proposal will be sent to the Executive Committee and Full Council for a final decision.

The proposed names will be implemented in Westville, Ward 24.

The names will refer to the theme of the area which includes trees and shrubs and are representative of the community sentiments.

Reviewed names include Pigeonwood Drive, Bushwillow Crescent, Sicklebush Terrance and Candlewood Lane.

In terms of council procedure all ward councillors and PR councillors were informed of the pilot project to rationalise addresses in the area.

Rationalisation of addresses means that each and every street within the Municipality should be named. This process also includes rationalising the physical address numbering system based on Erf numbers to a street name. This system would be adopted as a municipal-wide standard.

Westville councillors worked with the community to submit proposed names and as a result no objections were received.

The naming of these streets will provide for easy identification of the roads and for ease of movement in the area including for adjoining areas such as Sherwood.

Street renaming is part of the Municipality’s 2004 decision to rename roads and provide address numbers to all households within the municipal area.
