SAFA And KZN Netball Fully Support EThekwini's First Mayoral Cup Initiative

In a bid to inspire and encourage youth of eThekwini to live a healthier and active lifestyle while reaching for their dreams, eThekwini Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo launched the City’s first Mayoral Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium today, 11/06/2015.

The event, attended by Thabile Masinga representing KwaZulu-Natal Netball, South African Football Association’s Kwenza Ngwenya and Bafana Bafana players, Siphelele Ntshangase and Bongi Ntuli, is one of a series of youth development programmes planned by the City aimed at commemorating the sacrifice made by the Youth of 1976 and to ensure that young people are fully integrated into the mainstream economy.

Nxumalo said sports does not only lead to the physical wellbeing of an individual but it also has the power to unify, empower and motivate young people.

“It is the aim of the Mayoral Cup to cultivate the vast talent that lies undiscovered in eThekwini, and that is why we have involved all 103 Wards in all 17 Zones,” he said.

Nxumalo said the Cup would also be an opportunity to prepare the youngsters who had ambitions to compete in the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Ngwenya and Masinga said SAFA and KZN Netball would fully support the Mayoral Cup.

“SAFA is proud to be part of such an initiative as we recognise the positive outcomes from the Mayor’s sports initiatives,” said Ngwenya.
