Refuse Collection Services Disrupted in Umlazi Due to Strike
Refuse collection has been disrupted in all sections in Umlazi, south of Durban, due to protest action by employees working under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
EThekwini Municipality officials addressed the protesters today, 23 March 2016, where it was agreed that members of the City leadership will have a meeting with them so that they can understand in detail what their grievances are.
Durban Solid Waste is making every effort to ensure minimal disruption to refuse collection services and that affected areas are serviced.
EPWP is a national government initiative that seeks to provide poverty and income relief through temporary work for the unemployed to carry out socially useful activities.
The City apologises to residents and businesses for any inconvenience that this unforeseen strike has caused. The Municipality is working hard to attend to the refuse collection backlogs.
Issued by eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Thulani Mbatha.
