Recovery Underway At a Collapsed Construction Site at Jacobs
Recovery operations are currently underway at a construction site that collapsed earlier today, 28 March 2018, at Chamberlain Road in Jacobs.
Four concrete slabs (11m high and weighing 14 tons) collapsed at around 13h00 falling on top of workers on site. Five patients received serious injuries and have been transported to hospital. Three workers were trapped under the rubble and have been confirmed dead. Their bodies have been recovered by the emergency personnel.
Chamberlain Road has been closed on both lanes and traffic is being diverted. The cause of the collapse is not yet known and further investigations will be conducted once the recovery process has been completed.
Mayor Zandile Gumede has expressed her condolences to the families of the workers who lost their lives during this tragic incident. She also wished the five workers who have been hospitalised a speedy recovery. “The sudden loss of lives of our people is indeed a sad occasion. A thorough investigation into the cause of the incident will be conducted. Incidents of this nature cannot be accepted as they not only have a negative impact on families, but affect our economy as the City,” said Gumede
