Parade Through Durban CBD to Shine Spotlight on HIV/AIDS Awareness
A high powered government delegation, led by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, will be joined by thousands of eThekwini residents, academics and AIDS activists on Friday, 8 April 2016, during a parade through the City streets to launch the 21st International AIDS Conference.
The launch marks 100 days to the start of the five-day conference to be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre from 18 to 22 July 2016.
The 13th International AIDS Conference was held in Durban in 2000 and this was the first time that the conference was held on African soil.
The return of the International AIDS Conference to Durban is highly significant for a number of reasons, as the year 2000 conference was pivotal in focusing the world's attention on the impact of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa and fundamentally changing the course of the epidemic on the continent.
Before the start of the public ceremony at Gugu Dlamini Park, near the Workshop Shopping Centre, a media briefing will be hosted, where the Deputy President, Provincial and Local Leadership will outline the country’s robust interventions that have had a marked impact on the HIV prevalence rate, life expectancy, maternal and infant mortality. They will also detail eThekwini’s state of readiness to host the over 20 000 local and international delegates who will be attending the 21st International AIDS Conference.
Thereafter, the political delegation, led by the Deputy President will join the parade that will start at King Dinuzulu Park, proceed down Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme Street and end at Gugu Dlamini Park, where the launch and official ceremony marking the 100 day countdown to the conference will take place.
The details of the media briefing are as follows:
