MUNICIPALITY ALLOWS FOR THE ERECTION OF TOMBSTONES ON GRAVESITES

In 2011, the Municipality took a decision to only allow the erection of headstones on gravesites, as opposed to tombstones.

This was done to allow for more burial space and ensure uniformity of gravesites, which would ultimately contribute to the aesthetic look of the cemeteries.

Numerous residents have expressed unhappiness about the new by-law. As a caring Municipality, the rule was reviewed and people’s feelings taken into consideration. As a result, Council has rescinded its decision and decided to revert back to the old system. With immediate effect, residents are now allowed to erect tombstones on the gravesites of their loved ones at all Municipal cemeteries.
Issued by eThekwini Municipality’s Communications Head, Tozi Mthethwa.
