Metro Police Nab Cable Thieves

The Metro Police in Isiphingo have made a breakthrough in the electricity cable theft saga over the weekend. Two men were arrested for possession of municipal electricity cabling. One of the perpetrators is a municipal contractor employed to replace cables and reconnect electricity.

Members of the Metro Police Unit arrested a man with 30m of cables who led them to the contractor who was illegally selling the cables to the public. The Metro Police set up a sting operation and nabbed the contractor red handed trying to sell them the cables. More than 400m of cables was found at his premises.

The Municipality views this contravention in serious light and warns all contractors and service providers not to engage in illegal activity. The city will be conducting an investigation and taking relevant action against the contractor that may see his company being blacklisted, thereby disabling him from doing business with any organ of the state in the future.

The public are urged to report any fraud, corruption and maladministration in the Municipality to the City Integrity and Investigations Unit on their toll free number, 0800 202020 or email ombuds@durban.gov.za.
