The media are invited to attend the opening of Durban’s premier greening event, the 8th Sustainable Living Exhibition, which is due to begin on Friday, 15 September at the Exhibition Centre.

The exhibition is seen as key to educating and developing youth to care for our natural environment and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Thousands of learners are transported to the event to learn more and engage with exhibitors in fun and informative ways.

Hosted by the Imagine Durban Programme, the exhibition began as a means to educate the public about climate change and inspire a change in behaviour that protects the environment and our natural heritage.

The exhibition also speaks to the City’s long term goals and showcases what people are doing within the six thematic areas of the Imagine Durban Plan, viz. Safety, Accessibility, Prosperity, Culture and Heritage, Sustainability, Care and Empowerment.

Focus areas include climate change adaptation and mitigation, water and energy saving, recycling, food and water wise gardening.

The exhibition fits within the context of the regional and global sustainable development agenda in the form of Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Climate Change Agreement, National Development Plan and Provincial Growth and Development Strategy (PDGS).

A key attraction this year is the Durban University of Technology’s Energy Bus that has been especially modified to promote clean energy solutions and explain how various renewable energy systems work. DUT Design students will take to the stage with garments made of recyclable material. This has proved to be a popular attraction in previous years and proof that the youth are leading the green revolution.

The exhibition encourages communities to act together in a unified way towards building a resilient and sustainable city and achieving the vision of being Africa’s most caring and liveable city.

The event is on from 15 – 17 September at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 9am -5pm. Entry is free. Free parking is available at the Centrum site.
