Mayor Sends Condolences To The Family Of Professor Gumbi

EThekwini Municipality Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo has expressed his deepest condolences to the family of Professor Rachel Vuyiswa Gumbi who passed away on Christmas Day.

Professor Gumbi, the former chief executive of Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital and the first woman Vice-Chancellor at the University of Zululand was a remarkable leader.

This was evident when she was recalled from retirement in 2010 and entrusted to lead Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Umlazi. During her tenure she restored public confidence in the institution. She retired in April 2015.

She was one of the important players in the health-care field, having served as an adviser to the World Health Organisation. She was the first black president of the South African Nursing Council between 1995 and 2003.

We grateful for her contribution and dedication to the health sector.
