City Launches Bremen-Durban Marine Environmental Education Project
In response to addressing climate change challenges and to promote the protection of the marine environment, eThekwini Municipality will be launching the Bremen-Durban Marine Environmental Education Project on Wednesday, 21 February at City Hall.
Members of the media are invited to attend the launch where senior Municipal officials will introduce the partnership between eThekwini Municipality and Bremen, a German government institute which aims to educate the public on the importance of protecting the sea environment. It further aims to create awareness and equip the public with information on the role played by marine environment in the global ecosystem and in regulating the global climate, weather and water cycles.
At the launch, senior management of the Municipality will also introduce the Youth Empowerment Programme in Marine Environment which has been established through the Bremen-Durban partnership as well as outlining how it will unfold and benefit the youth of eThekwini.
EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede said the City is excited to partner with the German government as they have strong institutions in the field of maritime research and environmental education. “This partnership will transfer skills and expertise that will assist young people with opportunities to explore, discover and value marine and coastal habitats which may ultimately lead to behavioral change within communities,” she said
She added that the ocean plays a very important role in all aspects of our lives, most importantly in controlling the climate; the tourism sector; recreational activities; creating employment and a host of other benefits. “It is important that we do our part to protect it and ensure that the survival of the oceans and that they are well sustained for future generations,” said Mayor Gumede.
