KENNEDY ROAD FIRE VICTIMS RECEIVING HELP

The eThekwini Municipality is offering help to Kennedy Road Informal Settlement fire victims following a blaze that razed more than 80 shacks to the ground on Tuesday morning. It is still unclear what ignited the blaze but according to an eyewitness, the fire started from one of the shacks that were unoccupied.

When the fire broke out most of the dwellers were away, as a result, the Municipality only started doing the assessment and offering relief yesterday and the process is continuing today up until all the victims have been documented. So far only 82 people have come forward to claim ownership of the 80 burned structures. The victims are temporarily accommodated at a local hall and some are sheltering with friends and neighbours.

The victims have been provided with blankets, food and counselling with the help of NGO’s.

No person was injured and an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
