Innovation and Entrepreneurship vital to economic growth and progress

THE much anticipated 3rd International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship which will be held for the first time in South Africa will commence tomorrow, 19 March at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The conference is bringing together international and national innovation and entrepreneurship experts under one roof to share ideas and knowledge that will assist the City in accomplishing its vision of becoming an Innovative City by helping in implanting the culture of innovation to locals. This is crucial in ensuring that the City maintains its ability to be globally competitive, foster meaningful employment and economic growth.

Keynote speaker is Taddy Blecher of the Human Resource Development Council; South Africa. He is the co-founder of CIDA City Campus and was given the World Economic Forum's Global Leader for Tomorrow Award in 2002 and 2005. He has passion and vast experience in creating employment opportunities for disadvantaged youth.

The conference will also incorporate group discussions where various topics will be discussed such as; strategies employed to support regional innovation and entrepreneurship in Southern Africa which will be led by Juha Miettinen from Windhoek, Namibia, the role of universities in entrepreneurship education which will be steered by Lloyd Reason-Lester of Anglia Ruskin University situated in Cambridge, United Kingdom, promoting a better entrepreneurial culture among women and discussion on effect of entrepreneurial intention on new service development.

Deputy Mayor of eThekwini Municipality Nomvuzo Shabalala who also chairs the Economic Development and Planning Committee said: “In South Africa, entrepreneurship and innovation is often mentioned as a solution to create enough decent work for everyone; therefore this is one of our plans as government to achieve that and invest in skills development in order to create sustainable employment.”

Shabalala said she is confident that this conference will come up with the best guidelines and techniques to assist local entrepreneurs to adapt to change and think innovatively at all levels. This is because innovation results in the production of new or improved goods and services in order to stay competitive and to meet the demands and expectations of clients.
