Gospel Stars To Be Crowned

The winners of the 2015 edition of the Gospel Icons Discovery talent search will receive R10 000, a full recording deal, a photoshoot and a clothing sponsor. This was announced at a media briefing held at the Durban Art Gallery today, 30 September 2015. 

The Municipality will host the Grand Finale of the talent search on Sunday, 11 October 2015at Ohlange Sports Ground. Categories to be judged include; solo, junior (15 years and below) and group acts. 

On the day of the final, 15 finalists from each category will perform in front of a live audience. First runners-up will receive R5 000 and a three-song contract while the second runners-up will receive R3 000 and a three-song contract. The winners will be mentored by esteemed musicians, Thina Zungu, Thulani Ga Ndlela and DJ Happygal, who are also part of the judging panel. 

Councillor Mxolisi Ndzimbovu of the Community and Emergency Services Committee said Council is committed to ensuring that arts and culture in the City is developed. 

“Arts and culture is a driving tool for social cohesion and economic development. That is why the Municipality is committed to ensuring that we develop our artists and create platforms for them to be able to ply their trade and grow in the industry,” he said. 

Ndzimbovu said the Gospel Icons Discovery does not only uncover the wealth of talent we have in our beautiful City, but also helps to keep our youth entertained and off the streets.

Judge, DJ Happygal said that throughout the auditions process, they had seen over 400 participants who displayed immense talent and dedication. “It has been heart-breaking to have to sift down to the numbers required for the final and it will be even more difficult to choose the winners, as all the participants are very talented. Our City has a lot of talented people who just need the right platform to showcase their musical abilities.” 

The Head of Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, Thembinkosi Ngcobo said that the competition is one of the vehicles that the Municipality uses to drive arts and culture development in the City. 

“We believe that arts and culture is one of the key sectors that contribute to economic development, tourism and social cohesion in the City. The Gospel Icons Discovery aims to unearth and groom upcoming gospel artists,” he said.

Ngcobo added that the competition will help talented musicians launch their gospel career and inspire the youth to reach for their dreams. 

“The programme is also designed to enhance business opportunities for musicians through educational, networking and mentoring opportunities,” said Ngcobo.

For the final, established and highly acclaimed music producers have been invited to scout for potential talent. They include; Duma ka Ndlovu, Mthunzi Namba and many others. 

The grand finale will start at 09h00 and members of the public are welcome to attend, free of charge. There will also be performances by Pastor Ncanda, Mabusi Gcabashe, Bongani Mchunu, Amazing Grace, Uzalo Choir, Mqondisi, Andile Mbili, Fikile Mlomo and Abathandwa.
