Gospel Singing Sensation Search Now On
The search to find the next Gospel singing sensation is underway and the competition is open to talented vocalists of all ages.
The 4th edition of EThekwini Municipality’s Gospel Icon Discovery Competition, also known as “Gospel ID” promises to be bigger and better.
Now in its fourth year, the music talent search programme has unearthed some of the City’s best vocalists in the past.
This year, the winner will walk away with R15 000 in cash, a recording deal and a once in a lifetime opportunity to share the stage with gospel superstars during the Essence Festival in November. The second place winner will take home R 10 000 and third place will get R5 000.
Head of Parks, Recreation and Culture Thembinkosi Ngcobo said the programme is more than a music competition.
“It has a positive impact on the society, develops musical skills and assists participants in reaching their aspirations,” he said.
Ngcobo said the winner of the inaugural competition Bongani Mchunu, was unemployed and homeless when he entered.
“Since winning the competition his life has changed for the better as he now has a home, an album and he has been criss-crossing the province performing and promoting his album,” Ngcobo added.
Mchunu is currently working on his second album and has collaborated with Thina Zungu who won the Best Song Writer Category at the SABC Gospel Crown Awards.
