Enhancing The Participation Of Women In Economic Development Programmes

EThekwini Municipality will be hosting the Women Empowerment Conference to enhance the participation of women in development programmes, which is essential not only for achieving social justice but also for reducing the triple challenges of inequality, poverty and unemployment.

During the conference, businesswomen will also be given an opportunity to share ideas with their peers on how they have developed their business in order to inspire others who are already running businesses or those who aspire to become entrepreneurs.

The Municipality acknowledges the valuable contribution made by women in the economic growth and development of the City and such conferences have been established to empower women with business skills.

The conference which will take place at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on 06 August 2015, will focus on ways of enhancing women economic development in various sectors.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala said, “As government we believe that women play a pivotal role in transforming the economy of our country in order to address unemployment, poverty and equality. The Municipality has established programmes to empower women, which is more important now as the country enters its second phase of our democratic transition, which focuses on radical economic transformation,” said Shabalala.

Shabalala added that the Municipality has partnered with reputable companies to ensure that women in business are capacitated with business skills, which will ensure that take full advantage of the economic opportunities available to them, particularly in male dominated sectors.

“This will surely position the Municipality as a City that supports the development of women by creating an enabling environment for them to access business opportunities and create sustainable livelihoods,” said Shabalala.

The Municipality is inviting women in business and those who are interested in starting their business to register and be part of this exciting Women Empowerment Conference.

Application forms are now available and the registration fee to take part in the conference is R150. The closing date for registration is 31 July 2015.
