EThekwini Municipality to Host Model Search Workshops

EThekwini Municipality is looking for aspirant fashion models eager to break into the modelling industry. Successful candidates will get the opportunity to strut the catwalk at the Durban Fashion Fair 2016, Durban’s annual premier fashion event.

This initiative is part of the Municipality’s Fashion Development Programme to assist youth determined to pursue a professional modelling career by offering them a platform to showcase their talent.

The model search process will take place in all three regions of eThekwini. Aspirant models are not required to have previous modelling experience or be represented by an agency and don’t require a portfolio of photographs.

All selected individuals will be professionally trained to walk on the runway where they will be showcasing the garments of a number of prestigious designers both locally and abroad.

EThekwini Deputy Mayor Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala said the Municipality was proud of the progress the Fashion Development Programme has made in nurturing the talent of young people in the modelling industry.

“This programme is not only about modelling but it allows models to build their knowledge about the fashion industry. This will improve their chances of being successful in this highly competitive field,” said Shabalala.

She said another aim of the programme was to build a culture of entrepreneurship among the youth. “We want to ensure that the youth become actively involved in addressing socio-economic challenges facing our society through entrepreneurship,” Shabalala added.

She further encouraged youth to grab such opportunities with both hands as it will expose them to various aspects of the fashion industry.

“The country’s economy is slightly recovering and the demand in the retail sector will increase as new trends emerge. With this, consumer confidence will increase and spending will encourage the expansion of retail clothing stores which will result in the industry employing more models,” said Shabalala.
