EThekwini Municipality to Host Informal Traders Imbizo 2017

EThekwini Municipality will be hosting an Informal Traders Imbizo on Wednesday, 29 November to further unlock jobs and economic growth within the informal economy sector. The Imbizo is a platform where Mayor Zandile Gumede will outline strategies to transform the City’s informal economy into an efficient and competitive economy.

The media is invited to attend the Informal Traders Imbizo taking place at the Curries Fountain Stadium at 10h00am.

The Imbizo aims to address challenges faced by informal traders on a daily basis and promote a good working relationship with relevant sectors for improved city management. The City will unpack progress made in the development of traders as well as plans to upgrade infrastructure for informal traders in eThekwini.

Mayor Zandile Gumede, who will give a key note address to traders, will also launch the bulk buying project that was piloted in the Phoenix, Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu (PINK) areas in partnership with IThala Limited, and North Region Business Owners Association (NORBOA).

Mayor Gumede said, “The informal sector remains an important pillar in addressing the unemployment as well as a vehicle to alleviate poverty and drive economic growth. This sector plays a significant role in the development of the City through job creation and expanding the city’s economy.”

The Imbizo will be preceded by the official opening of the R3.5m Mealie Cookers’ Facility located in Warwick Avenue, opposite St Aidans Hospital. This facility will provide informal traders who are cooking mealies, an improved and dignified space to cook, sell and access the market. This facility will be officially open in Warwick Avenue at 09h00.

Mayor Gumede added that the introduction of this facility and the hosting of the Imbizo is an indication that the Municipality is committed to create an enabling environment for small businesses to establish themselves in transforming and growing the local economy.
