EThekwini Mayor to Launch EThekwini’s Agri-Business and Mechanisation Programme
As part of government’s effort to break down barriers in the food value chain and ensure transformation in the agricultural sector, eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede will officially launch eThekwini Municipality’s Agri-Business and Mechanisation Programme on Friday, 23 March at Ottawa Community Farm near Verulam.
Members of the public are invited to attend the event.
The government established Radical Agrarian Socio-Economic Transformation (RASET) programme aimed at creating an alternative value chain to deal with structural barriers to economic transformation in the agriculture sector. Through RASET, eThekwini has initiated the Agri-Business and Mechanisation Programme as an approach to provide support to the agriculture sector.
This initiative aims to create opportunities for previously disadvantaged farmers and reduce dependency on state support while increasing agricultural land utilisation.
At the launch, Mayor Gumede will present progress made to date of eThekwini’s Agri-Business as well as the development overview of the programme and related investments in the City.
Mayor Gumede said the Municipality has identified that the agricultural sector plays a significant role as it has the ability to eradicate poverty, unemployment and inequality. “Our aim is not only to address the challenges but also to enhance access to government and private sector markets in food supply,” she said.
As part of this initiative, the Municipality has explored opportunities with various sectors that procure food. This aims to unlock potential for Black Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises to play a meaningful role in the production and supply value chain leading to transformation of the sector.
