EThekwini Games a Huge Success

The 2018 edition of eThekwini Games ended on a high note when District six were crowned champions at the Olive Convention Centre on Sunday, 22 July 2108.

The games saw over 4000 athletes from all wards of the Municipality converge at different sports facilities to participate in the Municipality’s 16 priority sports codes, namely, soccer, rugby, tennis, chess, boxing, karate, basketball, volleyball, indigenous games, athletics, dance, table tennis, swimming, golf, cricket and netball.

The Head of Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, Thembinkosi Ngcobo, thanked all the participants for representing their teams with zeal and determination. “I am very impressed with the amount of passion and talent displayed at the games. I have no doubt that with hard-work and determination we will produce future world-class sports stars who will fly the Durban flag high at international events,” said Ngcobo.

Vama Shabalala, Manager and Coach of the Eyethu Boxing Club in Umlazi said that the games were a great opportunity for young athletes to be exposed to competitive sports and showcase their talent. “My team, representing District six, became the overall winners and I am very happy with the results. I would like to see the games grow bigger so that more of our children get exposure and hopefully progress to professional leagues,” said Shabalala.

Results of the games were as follows:

First position went to District six (wards 76, 78 - 90) who received five gold medals and six silver medals.

Second position was District nine (wards 12 - 24 and 92) who got three gold, four silver and one bronze.

Third place was District three (wards 11, 34 - 47, 104, 107) who got two gold, two silver and five bronze medals.

Athletes identified during the games will be selected to represent Team eThekwini at the KZN DSR SALGA Games scheduled to take place in Pietermaritzburg in December 2018.
