The City recently approved the Durban Investment Promotion Strategy which aims to facilitate sustainable investment in Durban through expansion, retention and aftercare of the existing multi-national investors. It also proactively targets significant new foreign direct investment via a sector-focussed strategy. The elevated Unit responsible for this is now known as “Invest Durban”.
The establishment of this Unit and the Team Durban forum will ensure that these strategies, aimed to better position the City as an investment destination, are implemented. The Team Durban forum will also provide an advisory role and support City leadership with investment promotion related development policies, strategies and optimal practices for the City.
EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede said these formations a strategic intervention by City leadership to identify investments gaps and create ways of accelerating more direct investments into the City. “It will help us to be better informed and mobilised into a multi-disciplinary partnership with senior Stakeholders to facilitate increased investment. This includes advising on the necessary resources, programmes, skills and other inputs to enhance the state of our economy,” said Mayor Gumede.
“This Team Durban advisory forum will also help to broaden linkages for existing local businesses with new economic and trading partners abroad. It will assist local companies to access the value-chains of large foreign investors active in our City,” she said.
Mayor Gumede added that the City leadership implemented Team Durban as a way of improving the investment environment, deepening the partnership with key Stakeholders, accelerating economic transformation, and introducing greater numbers of new foreign Investors. This will then pay significant socio economic and fiscal benefits to all in Durban.
