Durban Ready To Host MMAS
Durban Tourism is ready to host the 16th Metro fm Music awards, which are set to light up the City in more ways than one. The 16th METRO FM Music Awards, in partnership with the City of Durban and the Kwa-Zulu Natal Provincial government, will once again take place at the ICC on Saturday, 25/02/2017.
The Mayor of eThekwini, Cllr Zandile Gumede, says the people of Durban are very excited and ready to welcome the multitudes of visitors who will be in the City during this upcoming weekend.
“From a logistics point of view, as the City we are ready to welcome and host our visitors to the Metro awards. Our hotels and other related facilities are of world standards and we have the infrastructure to deliver yet another spectacle of an event,” she said.
“Most importantly, we are excited at the prospect of the huge economic spin-offs that we have projected for the awards weekend. Based on the calculations from previous times when we hosted the awards, we are expecting to generate an economic activity of no less R72m directly into the economy of the City. Our hotels have reported an average of 70-90% room occupancy and we expect that this will create and sustain many jobs in the tourism and hospitality sector,” said Gumede.
Gumede added that the City had also hosted a successful Artist Development Workshop as a way of creating a legacy of the awards for the City. The Artist Development Workshop focuses on the transfer of skills to emerging artists with information on the intricacies of the business of music.
Some of the key focus areas include linkages to different music organisations and how they can benefit them, submissions of music to radio stations & record labels, packaging of music, technicalities of music i.e. sampling, contracts and how they work, and many other related aspects.
This year the City has embarked on an intensive marketing campaign to attract visitors from all over the country through a number of activations nationwide and across the province of Kwazulu Natal. The overall message has been centered on “A memorable time in Durban” under the theme of “Sunsational Durban, 100% Pure Summer”. The awards will broadcast live on SABC 1 and people can join or follow the glitz and glam fun in social media platforms using the #DurbanSummer and #MMA16.
