Durban's Clean My City Programme Extends To Schools In The South

The Clean and Maintain My City Programme is stretching to all corners of eThekwini and members of the community are starting to take responsibility for their public spaces while creating a safe environment. It is for this reason that the next the clean-up programme will take place at Emthethweni Primary School in ward 85 this week.

Key issues the Municipality is tackling through this multi-disciplinary programme includes By-law infringements, derelict buildings, litter, pollution and social ills. These social challenges combined are tarnishing the image of our precious City.

EThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo said: “We are taking a zero-tolerance approach to challenges like crime, drugs and illegal activities. Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to keep the City beautiful and it time that our citizens play their part.”

Nxumalo said the programme is not only about Municipal employees but all of us need to take pride in the place that we live, play, shop and work.

“It’s about reclaiming our City”, Nxumalo added.

More than 20 schools have officially launched the programme, while more than 105 schools are actively participating. Emthethweni Primary School is joining the 105 schools for this campaign following the high number of criminal incidents at the school recently.

One of the contributing factors of this is the large bush area that is in the vicinity of the school.

The Clean and Maintain My City Programme team, comprising Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, Correctional Services, Ward Committee Members, Durban Solid Waste, Metro Police and Health will come together on Thursday, 15 October 2015 to conduct a clean-up of the area, cut the bushes and promote cleanliness as well as safety through an education and awareness drive.

Members of the media are invited to this event.
