Drive To Advance Innovation In Business

EThekwini Municipality’s Innovate Durban programme, in partnership with Oracle and the International Labour Organisation, will launch the second annual Youth Innovation Challenge on Monday, 25 January 2016 at Elangeni Hotel.

Experts in business and the technology sector will share their knowledge and expose youth to new and modern methods to help them advance in business. The programme aims to encourage innovative thinking to tackle challenges experienced by businesses and society at large.

EThekwini Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo said the purpose of the innovation challenge is to deal with socio-economic ills facing communities using modern technology.

“The City showed initiative by formulating an innovative strategy to come up with solutions using modern technology to address challenges crippling our economy. We hope to encourage youth to do the same by advancing their skills thus leading to increased profit and productivity in business,” said Nxumalo.

He said bringing experts on board will assist the youth of eThekwini who are entrepreneurs by equipping them with technical skills that will bring productivity and profit to their businesses.

This year’s innovation programme has several key role players on board who are experts in technology and business development. They are Oracle, the Sustainable Enterprise Development Facility of the International Labour Organisation, the Government of Flanders, Life Co Unlimited and the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

There are a lineup of activities following the launch where youth will have the opportunity to engage in business challenges. Among them is to come up with business solutions to challenges using modern technology that will boost the economy of the City.
