City to Host Youth Empowerment Programmes During June
EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede said the City will be hosting a number of youth empowerment events during June which is observed as Youth Month.
Mayor Gumede was speaking during the Executive Committee meeting at the Durban City Hall today, 13 June. She said the Youth Month Programme was launched on Saturday, 10 June where the City outlined its vision for young people.
“I fully support the youth development strategy for the City in terms of business, sports, skills, the arts and all other sectors. The City will be hosting a number of programmes throughout June where youth will be empowered,” she said.
These include a Youth Imbizo on radical economic transformation which will be held on 14 June at the uThongathi Outspan grounds.
On 17 June, a celebration will be held at Mpumalanga Stadium, Hammersdale to commemorate Youth Day. Over 5 000 young people will be invited to the event.
Two further youth Imbizos unpacking the City’s Radical Economic Transformation Framework and how youth can maximise the opportunity are planned, to be held on 19 June and 24 June respectively. Over 1 000 young people will be accommodated at each Imbizo.
The final event lined up is the Youth Council on 26 June where youth will get the opportunity to talk about development issues affecting them in the City.
Meanwhile, Mayor Gumede cautioned those who use her name as the Mayor of eThekwini without permission to promote their events in the City to cease from doing so.
“I am not against the arts or events being hosted in the City but if you want mayoral involvement you must follow the proper procedures and processes,” she said.
