City to Give Ladysmith Black Mambazo A Heroes Welcome

Members of the media are invited to be part of the homecoming celebrations of five-time Grammy Awards winners and Durban ambassadors, Ladysmith Black Mambazo from 11-12 April.

The celebrations to be led by Mayor Zandile Gumede will see the group officially congratulated on winning their fifth Grammy on 28 January at an award ceremony held in New York in the United States of America.

The Acapella group is returning to South Africa, Durban, for the first time, after winning in the category of Best World Music for their latest album, Shaka Zulu Revisited.

Mayor Gumede said the group are the official partners and ambassadors of the City of Durban. “The group fly the City’s flag high. Their performing gear is branded with the city’s logo and their music communicates Durban’s attractions.”

She said this further markets the City abroad as a destination of choice which is in line with the City’s Visitor Marketing Strategy.

“It is important to celebrate these local music icons achievements because their success is ours. They have a line-up of events where they will continue positioning Durban as they will soon start their European tour and perform at the Queen’s birthday ceremony in London,” added Mayor Gumede.

Proceedings of the celebrations will kick-start on 11 April. Mayor Zandile Gumede will be joined by artists and family members to welcome Ladysmith Black Mambazo at the King Shaka International Airport at 16h30. This will be followed by a short press briefing at the same venue.

The next day will see the group parading the streets of Durban on a Rickshaw bus to celebrate and showcase their Grammy Award victory. The parade will start at 10:00am and will conclude at 13:00pm. The bus will tour the entire inner City and will finish at Durban City Hall where there will be an address by Municipal leadership as well as a performance by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
