City Promotes Reading Through one City One Book
To promote and cultivate the culture of reading among citizens of eThekwini, the Municipality launched the One City One Book Campaign in 2013.
The campaign is aimed at encouraging all citizens to read one selected book for a period of a year and subsequently engage with the content and message of that book on various platforms across race, class, gender and age resulting in a raised interest in reading and a heightened passion for books. Thus promoting the culture of reading and social cohesion. It is also an opportunity to give local authors the exposure and platform to showcase their work.
The chosen book for 2017/18 is “Pavement Bookworm” by Philani Dladla. It focusses on dealing with various social ills such as drug addiction and consequences related to it. It will be launched at an event where school children, the author and other stakeholders will engage with the content of the book and give their interpretation of it through dialogue.
