City Geared up for First Busy Weekend of Festive Season

The festive season is now in full swing and visitors from all around the world are flocking to eThekwini to enjoy a festive and joyous holiday season.

As we approach the first “peak” weekend of the 2017 festive season, the Festive Season Management Committee (FESMAC) is confident that all systems put in place will ensure that the thousands of patrons who will visit our beaches and various attraction sites will have an enjoyable and hassle-free time.

With the forecast of cool and clear weather during the weekend, the Municipality anticipates that beaches will be packed to capacity, as both locals and visitors want to come and enjoy time with family and take a dip in the water.

To eliminate traffic congestion on the beachfront during the festive season, a park and ride system has been put in place. Private vehicles will be able to park at Centrum Site and Natal Command Site while public transport can park at the Old Drive Inn Site. The Municipality has provided a free shuttle service which will operate at 30 minute intervals throughout the festive season to ferry passengers between these sites and the beachfront. This service is one of the ways we are hoping to eliminate traffic congestion at the beach and ensure patrons are able to park in a safe and secure environment.

Some of the roads leading to the beachfront will be closed while others will be boom-gate controlled. When necessary these boom gates will be closed for the safety of all patrons. At that point only motorists with permits will be allowed access into the beachfront.

The Municipality also urges patrons to use water sparingly as the drought is not over yet.
