Celebrating International Museums Day

EThekwini Museums, namely the Durban Natural Science Museum, Local History Museums and Durban Art Gallery will be hosting International Museum Day (IMD) celebrations on the 17 and 18 May 2018.

International Museums Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of museums as the heartbeat for cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among people through education.

Under the theme “Hyper-connected museum: New Approaches, New Publics”, the focus of this year’s celebration is to introduce digital media platforms within the eThekwini Museum spaces. The increasing role of digital media in everyday life serves as the basis of connectivity between the museum and members of the public. The aim of this is to use digital media platforms to communicate with museum visitors globally and for them to have access to information pertaining to the museums’ ongoing programmes and other educational activities. The introduction of the eThekwini museums webpage and hashtag #DurbanMuseumsOnline will serve to provide information and interactive tools for users to connect with us daily.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit any of their local eThekwini museums on 17 and 18 May, take a selfie from inside the museum, post it in any of their social media profiles –most importantly #DurbanMuseumsOnline #IMD2018 #EThekwiniMunicipality and they stand a chance to win a t-shirt.
