Bus Drivers’ Strike Ends

Durban Transport bus driver’s strike has been called off after the City gave assurance that it was still committed to form the Municipal bus entity.

Bus drivers will return to work as from this afternoon, 25 July 2016 after an agreement was reached between the City and their employer, Tansnat.

In a meeting attended by bus drivers, Tansnat management, and Labour Unions at the Johannes Nkosi Bus depot, City Manager Sibusiso Sithole reassured bus drivers that the City was still committed to form the bus entity and has asked the bus drivers to be patient while all necessary processes are being finalised.

The meeting follows a strike by Durban Transport bus drivers which began last week Thursday due to the delay in the formation of a Municipal bus entity.

“We are currently at an advanced stage of forming an entity and are engaging with various stakeholders to finalise the process. However, the new MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda and the National Treasury have requested to be given some time to scrutinize the formation of the entity”, said Sithole.

“Once the Provincial Department of Transport and the National Treasury have given the City a go-ahead to implement the entity, the current bus operator will be given a three-month notice to allow all employees to be transferred to the entity,” Sithole added.

The City Manager committed that regular consultation of all role-players will be done to ensure that workers are kept abreast of developments.
The eThekwini council last year resolved to establish an entity that will manage bus operations with effect from 1 July. However, due to legislative processes, the entity could not be formed on the due date.

The bus service will be in full operation tomorrow, 26 July 2016. The municipality apologises to commuters for the inconvenience caused.
