Building a Socially Cohesive City
 
EThekwini Municipality will host its second Social Cohesion Conference on 21 to 23 April 2016 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.
 
The conference will open a platform for experts and opinion makers in various fields to engage in a robust dialogue about issues related to social cohesion and role to be played by various sectors in taking the country forward.
 
Day one of the conference will start-off with Advocate Christine Qunta giving a key-note address under the theme, “Can South Africa become a nation?”
 
Mr Sihle Zikalala, Chairperson of the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal, will then address delegates on the notion of a non-racial South Africa. His address will be followed by a panel discussion involving political commentator Eusebius Mckaizer, Lawrence Mavundla of National African Federation Chamber of Commerce, psychologist Dr Devi Rajab and Bishop Michael Vorster who is a recipient of eThekwini Living Legend Award.
 
There will be an afternoon session where Minister Faith Muthambi will deliver an address under the topic "SA Media cornerstone of nation building or perpetrators of our racial past". This will be followed by a panel discussion involving eThekwini Municipality Head of Communications, Ms Tozi Mthethwa; Ukhozi FM Acting Manager, Ms Zandile Tembe and The Mercury editor Mr Fikile Ntsikelelo Moya.
 
On day two, the Chairperson of the Municipality’s Community and Emergency Services Cluster, Cllr Zandile Gumede, will give an update on the strides made by the Municipality towards its vision of being the most liveable and socially cohesive city by 2030. This will be followed by a panel discussion by members representing various political parties from around the City, Abahlali baseMjondolo and the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
 
Other distinguished speakers include; Dr. Nkosinathi Sishi (Head of Education in KZN), Prof. Ahmed Bawa (Vice-Chancellor at the Durban University of Technology), Prof. Quarraisha Karrim (CAPRISA), Ms Dumile Cele (Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and many more.
 
NOTE: Members of the media will have an opportunity to engage with speakers of the day at 13h00 on each day of the conference.
