Being African: Nelson Mandela Lecture on Freedom Day
 
As the country celebrates Freedom Day on 27 April 2018, eThekwini Municipality, will celebrate the life and times of our struggle icon, Dr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, in a public lecture to be held at Ohlange Institute.
 
The year 2018 marks 100 years since the late struggle icon Dr Mandela was born. Celebrating his life and times on Freedom Day at Ohlange Institute is particularly significant because that is where he cast his first democratic vote in 1994. The lecture will also honour other stalwarts who played a pivotal role in the liberation of black people in South Africa. These stalwarts include Dr JL Dube, Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme, Mahatma Gandhi and many others.
 
The lecture will kick-off with uMkhonto weSizwe veterans leading in revolutionary songs. Mayor Zandile Gumede, Mr Mac Maharaj and Mr Jeff Radebe will be amongst the speakers of the day.
