Advancing Participation of Youth in Economic Growth
About 100 youth from the outskirts of eThekwini will be tasked to come up with innovative solutions to address challenges faced by business, at the Innovation Challenge Programme commencing tomorrow, 08 April 2016 at UKZN Howard College campus.
The Challenge is a partnership between the Municipality’s Innovate Durban, Oracle, International Labour Organisation and Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It will kick off with a Codfest where participating youth will develop mobile and web based applications (using the Oracle platform) in response to business challenge.
Mayor James Nxumalo said the involvement of the youth in activities of the Municipality is the core of the City’s agenda.
“They play a significant role in coming up with innovative solution to socio-economic challenges using modern technology. This programme helps to engage them in entrepreneurship opportunities and encourage business culture amongst the youth,” said Nxumalo.
The youth challenge programme is a crowd-sourcing platform that will assist in finding creative and alternative solutions even in challenges facing communities.
Nxumalo added that the youth participating in this programme will benefit by being exposed to a number of exciting opportunities and will be able to network with a number of successful business people in eThekwini. This will in turn assist businesses in this region to benefit by finding solutions to their business challenges using a pool of skilled youth.
During the process the youth will be eqquipped with a number of skills, including knowing how to work in teams, problem solving, networking, presentation and pitching and IT.
Thereafter, youth will be given an opportunity to enter the enterPRIZE Challenge where they will transform their ideas into business cases to start up their own businesses or get grant funding to inject into an already existing small business.
