2017 Magqubu Ntombela-Ian Player Lecture to focus on “Furs for Life” Project
EThekwini Municipality’s Natural Science Museum will host the 8th Annual Magqubu Ntombela - Ian Player Annual Lecture to be presented by Tristan Dickerson, who will speak on “Furs for Life”.
Tristan Dickerson (Panthera’s Furs for Life Co-ordinator) studied the issue of the increasing use of leopard fur for cultures and religions in South Africa. His work was initially around the use of leopard furs in the Shembe religion as this seemed to have the largest demand and where most of the leopard furs were heading. After taking time to gain a better understanding of the religion and the use of the leopard furs within it he came up with the ‘out of the box’ solution of trying to create an authentic looking synthetic fur to replace the expensive real furs.
Dickerson will share his journey of preserving nature while respecting cultural and religious practises.
Members of the media are invited to the lecture.
