Durban Business Fair To Inspire, Innovate And Grow Business

Excitement is mounting as the 17th instalment of Durban Business Fair (DBF), set to take place on 16 to 18 October 2015 at Durban Exhibition Centre is fast looming.

The City has introduced new elements to the DBF to ensure that the programme’s objectives to ‘Inspire, Involve, Innovate and Grow’ businesses are achieved.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala said: “I am pleased to reveal that for the first time in the DBF there will be a youth corner where the City has invited successful young minds to share with their fellow youth the journey to success at a young age and to let them know that it is possible to be young and successful.”

Shabalala said after numerous complaints about the youth feeling neglected, the City formed a Youth Desk in the Mayor’s Office in May this year. The Desk hosted the first ever Youth in Business Summit during Youth Month (June) and this is the continuation of that programme to address youth challenges and present available opportunities to them.

“At the youth corner participants will be given an opportunity to pitch their business ideas. Business experts and financial institutions that will be on site will give constructive feedback on the idea,” added Shabalala.

She said as part of the City’s commitment of instilling the culture of entrepreneurship at an early stage, which has been cited as the key answer to socio-economic challenges of unemployment and poverty, high school learners have been invited to attend the Youth Corner.

To add on the list of new elements is the Innovation Pavillion where all businesses are invited to pitch their creative business ideas in front of top innovative companies that are searching for the best creative and unique ideas to sponsor.

“As the City moves on being a Smart City we saw it fit to introduce this element as everything is technologically driven and that is where most opportunities are found,” said Shabalala.

As part of ‘Connecting Durban Business Fair Globally’ the representatives from China, Finland, Switzerland, Madagascar, Portugal, Nigeria, Cameroon, Denmark, German, Zimbabwe, United Kingdom and other European Union countries will be showcasing various innovative products and services at the International Pavilion during the Fair.

Shabalala said the International Pavilion is in line with the City’s global strategy to connect small businesses and ensure that they are able to do business at universal platforms provided by the Municipality. This is an opportunity for them to identify partnering countries and sectors to export their high-quality products, market their businesses, source sponsors and other opportunities.

The Trade Night and Speed Marketing are also the prominent features that will provide a networking platform to facilitate trade between small and big businesses and create linkages during the DBF.

The DBF exhibition will be preceded by a two-day business seminar on 13-14 October at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

Speakers will feature powerful international and national speakers such as Dr AL Sharpton founder and President of the National Action Network, Vusi Thembekwayo, a business speaker who empowers his audience with researched models and tools that they can immediately apply in their businesses.

Matsi Modise, an Advisory Board Member at Start Up Nations South Africa and Dion Chang an innovator, creative thinker, visionary and renowned trend analyst, will also be part of the panel.
